In fact the integrality is so great that even the most minute change in one’s life has a direct correlation to how we inhabit our spaces. It’s the means we have to recognise the world, build stories, and communicate with onWe often take the space that surrounds us for granted. Space is so deeply ingrained in the human experience that we rarely pause to question its significance. Yet, its integral role is such that even the smallest alteration within a space can profoundly impact a person's life and interpersonal communication.This narrative centers around the concept of space, with the chair playing the lead role. The chair, serving as the intermediary between spaces, is a versatile tool suitable for all age groups to explore spatial theory. Its most remarkable attribute lies in its potential as a medium for fostering interactions among individuals within a given space. The simple act of repositioning chairs not only redefines the space itself but also transforms the nature of interactions among its occupants.This book serves as a comprehensive exploration of spatial dynamics, with a focus on their role in communication. The study unfolds in three distinct phases: Imagination, Arrangement and Living. My mission is to delve into the effects of space and how it influences human interactions.The journey begins with the spaces we envision in our minds, then proceeds to their physical arrangement, and finally, culminates in the practical application for enhancing communication. This process was faithfully followed starting with 100 drawings of 2 chairs, each created by a different person. These drawings were then used as instructions to configure spaces for two individuals to occupy. The First Book:The Book of Shapes The inception of my initial creation, "The Book Of Shapes," laid the foundation for my subsequent work, "Imagining, Arranging, and Living With Chairs."During my childhood, I developed a deep affinity for playing with shapes, using them as a means of communication with my friends. In many ways, shapes were my earliest form of language. I began to recognize the inherent curiosity in children, a profound fascination with their innate desire to construct and create with their imaginations.Through the process of creating "The Book Of Shapes," I came to notice that children weren't merely playing with shapes; they were also engaging with the concept of space. Its most unique value is its potential as a medium for interaction between people when added into space. The simple act of changing the arrangement of the chairs changes not only the definition of the space itself but the nature of interaction between those within it. I initiated an experiment to investigate whether a chair could effectively serve as a tool for examining the theory of space, assessing its universal recognition rather than being an abstract concept.In this experiment, I invited 100 individuals to draw and conceptualize how a chair represents to them. My objective was to delve into the existence of established guidelines or principles governing the creation of chairs. What makes a “chair” a chair? Whether the space turns out pleasant, unfriendly, fearful, or inspiring, its construction is inherently intentional, even if we're unaware of it.The purpose of this 2nd phase was to validate my theory on the impact of space. Examining 100 illustrations featuring 2 chairs, 3 key findings surfaced: The arrangement of chairs mirrors the connections between individuals or shared experiences, whether it's a mother and daughter, father and son, or husband and wife. Our experiences shape our perception of space and guide how we design it. Every joyful, sad, or fearful encounter leaves an imprint on us, influencing how we communicate within those spaces.The seemingly simple act of illustrating 2 chairs reveals deep insights into an individual's personality and cultural background. Observing the connections between their culture, occupation, location, and the drawings, a chair can carry multiple meanings, all of which are universally understandable.To my surprise, this exercise uncovered a total of 30 unique combinations of chair positions, illustrating the unconscious yet impactful nature of our intentions for space. The brand design language had to respond to country specific audiences, different communication channels and also be optimised for the evolving digital and physical channels.The rich tapestry of cultures and traditions influenced diverse design approaches, resulting in inconsistencies. Lacking proper branding guidelines and tools, different countries introduced variations, encompassing different languages, alphabets, and unique brand requirements. To help guide the different design teams, advertisement agencies and content producers, a ‘Design Ethos’ was developed to articulate the spirit and personality of the design language, to open the doors to creative thinking, getting away from a dogmatic closed corporate design system.The design reboot includes a digitally optimised logo, a new icon system, colour scheme, type behaviour, art direction and more digitally native and functional elements.The A1 project holds a special place in my heart, reflecting my deep passion for design, as branding is communication which is the central theme in my life and most of my work.I was given the opportunity to travel to the countries involved, engaging with the people, studying and analyzing their patterns, psychology, and language for design. We conducted workshops on brand usage, and seeing people happy and excited about the work was incredibly fulfilling. In response to diverse needs, some countries took unconventional approaches, creating visual chaos. E.g: Bulgaria introduced yellow without a clear rationale. The lack of a unified language or guidelines led to inventive, sometimes chaotic solutions. This marked a departure from a cohesive visual identity, creating a brand with a split personality.Despite A1 being a single brand, the varied needs of different countries, distinct brand positions, languages, and cultures led to different visual expressions. Despite the logo's dynamic features, it became a diminished element in everyday applications, consistently placed on a white background atop commercial elements. Consequently, the overall brand lost its initial excitement, feeling devoid of identity and appearing flat. The essence of the brand seemed to fade amid commercial and commonplace elements, raising concerns about its presence. The brand lacked flexibility. Solution A “Design Ethos" was developed to serve as a guide for creative teams, regardless of their location or the nature of their work. Its purpose is to empower content creation with a sense of freedom while adapting the visual style to resonate with specific audiences. This Ethos is designed to align with the corporate mission while instilling tangible characteristics that stimulate the creative process.This guiding principle nurtures a creative process that embodies the essence of design, promoting user experiences that forge authentic connections while prioritizing simplicity, functionality and flexibility. Owning the 3D space We began working on the logo by eliminating the shutter and shadow elements. We also reoriented the logo's perspective to imbue it with a dynamic and lively quality. This adjustment provided us with increased flexibility and excitement, allowing the design to break free from constraints.The A1 logo has always been unique but its true characteristic is its dimensional aspect. The logo needed to perform in a wider variety of spaces by developing an optimised version designed for digital environments, discarding the white container and creating new versions meant the logo could now behave in a more adventurous way. Added to this basic palette was a range of accent colours that give variety and usability to the digital environment and a richer, more lively visual language for communications.Within this system, we introduced an additional palette with gradients and other elements, allowing for the inclusion of colors beyond red. Typography Type and headline styles underwent a complete overhaul, offering creative liberty within the design system. Although the iconic A1 font possessed distinctiveness, its versatility had been limited. A new outline variation of the typeface was developed, and roles were reassigned to A1 Sans and Serif fonts. This transformation enabled greater responsiveness to the brand's evolving needs. Iconography In line with the evolution of the design system to respond to a more digital environment, icons were developed to work at the smallest possible pixel dimensions but equally to work as animated communication elements to illustrate concepts and messages. Digital The brief required a fundamental change in the way the brand personality was expressed in digital touchpoint. The dimensionality, materiality and colour palette pushed the UI elements to a totally new space for the brand, unlocking the potential for the digital teams to generate a new kind of experience for A1. Visual Language The whole visual brand language was built on the‘Design Ethos’ where relevance to audiences and performance are more important than consistency. This tweet was instantly illuminated through LCD lights attached to the chairs of the 80,000 spectators in attendance.This succinct yet impactful statement served as the catalyst for my personal project, motivating me to delve into the evolving perspectives across generations regarding an element that has become an essential aspect of modern life. I couldn't help but question, "Is 'this' truly for everyone?"With a global population of 7 billion people, only 40% have access to this nearly indispensable tool that defines participation in what we refer to as "modern society." The internet stands as one of the most influential inventions, rapidly transforming our world. The speed at which dependence on this invention has grown is truly astounding and, admittedly, something I, like many others, am guilty of.Within this project, I explored the profound impact of this mighty invention on our society and its transformation of different generations. Fashioned from ropes and wooden components, its versatility shines as it can transition into a bench, coffee table, or even twin standalone chairs. At its core lies the principle of interconnected ropes, eliminating the need for nails.My experiments pave the way to reintroduce the importance of tactile sensations, logical reasoning, and creativity in shaping our surroundings. The decisions we make about a space carry weight, whether consciously or subconsciously. The vision entails crafting pieces where the recipient's choices dictate their assembly and functionality. These components should coalesce, enabling varied human interactions and sparking creativity to manifest diverse shapes. From essential pieces like chairs and tables to purely aesthetic forms, their adaptability ensures they evolve with our dynamic lives.Rather than serving purely as a decorative piece, my goal was to engineer functional items that challenge the prevailing culture of disposable furniture, which poses environmental threats. I believe there should be a shift towards valuing and retaining quality items, promoting a sustainable approach to consumption.Investing in lasting quality not only minimizes replacements but also elevates the intrinsic worth of possessions, fostering sustainability. This furniture transcends mere functionality, offering joy as it shifts effortlessly between forms. The seamless rope system facilitates easy linkage; connect here, connect there, and witness their harmonious integration. Multiple design revisions were necessary to achieve for the desired durability, requiring close collaboration with my carpenter to devise pragmatic solutions.The process encompassed thorough redesigns using Autodesk to evaluate the viability of our selected blueprint. Tweaks and refinements were integrated to ensure the end product upheld its strength while eschewing nails. Overcoming the intricacies of this project hinges on devising an economically viable design, beneficial not just in the present but also for forthcoming production phases.Another hurdle: “How do I guarantee the flawless assembly of individual components?” This meant granting users adaptability while upholding the structural integrity to avert any impractical or hazardous setups. From a construction perspective, the task was demanding, especially as I envisioned a nail-free assembly. The aim was to cultivate a user-friendly experience by sidelining tools like screwdrivers. The primary aspiration is to render the assembly process instinctual, sparing users from deciphering intricate guidelines. Rope&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Natural cotton nature, dyed with non-toxic dyes, further solidifies our eco-friendly stance. Prioritizing sustainability and community, we use locally sourced materials, emphasizing their eco-friendly benefits and reduced carbon footprint. Our portfolio showcases various wood samples, design sketches, and development stages, providing a holistic view of our design journey. Evolving from a round to a flat, ergonomic backrest illuminates our design considerations. The final prototype, while initially plywood-based due to budget constraints, paves the way for an indigenous wood, potentially oak, final piece. The design, absent of nails, symbolizes shared moments without the necessity for constant conversation—allowing for a shared yet quiet space, whether reading a book or engaging in individual activities, fostering a comforting atmosphere.I chose rope because I aimed for a contrast in materials, seeking a blend of the rigid and the soft to introduce a sense of play and movement. This choice also carries a metaphorical significance, symbolizing connections and the act of building relationships. During the assembly process, the realization struck me that this design could potentially serve as a catalyst for communal connections.The infinity sign is symbolic—it started as a straight line, but it felt incomplete. The crisscrossed form adds a sense of connection, making it more meaningful. Companies like Icon Build, known for 3D-printed housing and collaborations with NASA, highlight the fusion of technology, design, and ethical considerations. Balancing academic knowledge with practical experience remains crucial. I initially considered hands-on work but opted for a Master's program to deepen my design understanding. While my academic foundation shapes my perspective, real-world application remains invaluable. To capture the magical and energetic essence of this event, the invitation was crafted with simplicity in color, allowing the event's distinctive shapes to take center stage. Subtle typographical elements were incorporated to hint at the primary visual imagery of the Venice Carnival masks without being overt. In addition to the invitation, I undertook the creation of a new branding image for the Carnival. Drawing inspiration from symbolic shapes and colors, I infused a modern aesthetic while preserving the festival's dramatic ambiance in the overall branding. <img width="2858" height="1606" task that is almost impossible to accomplish. As much as todays world and the overload of images being thrown at us tries to define these words in society, it is something so subjective that a concrete definition can never exist. The strategies artists and designers have employed in order to grasp the attention of it’s audience has evolved and changed along side the inevitable change in society, yet these two words have remained fundamental indicators. The difficulty of defining these words such as beauty, ugly, shocking and sublime have drastically changed through out history but the desire for the shocking, ugly and the unpleasant in visual culture has remained a constant. As Michael Kammen said “It is neither accidental nor coincidental that many of the most controversial artists of our time have explicitly declared the desirability of ambiguity. ”&nbsp; Ambiguity is something that is open to an infinite amount of interpretations, making the definition of what one is looking at hard to define. The removal of a concise definition in our restricted language both extract an anxiety as one views and creates beauty within the mystery. The beautifully ugly is an exploration of a method of finding beauty through abstractions by collection 100 images of visual culture that has been branded ugly and extracting out of context enough for them to loose there original definition. I research and analysed the so called definitions of words such as beauty, ugly, shocking and sublime through out the last two centuries in order to choose the images. The importance of language is such an inherent part of our being that if we don’t have the exact words to define a possible infinite amount of definitions, it almost becomes impossible to comprehend,
